About the Show:

I Made This For You is a queer solo clown show for all ages. This silent-film-meets-live-theatrical-clown show explores the vulnerability of putting yourself out there, and the resilience to try, and try, and try again reminding us that connection is often found in unexpected places.

Trouble with Tinder? Unlucky in love? Sick of swiping? Hildegaard’s Dating Service & Matchmaking Agency is here for you! And for our lonely Clown. Go on a journey of self-discovery with Clown as she meets potential lovers on the bumpy road to finding love.

All ages, groups, orientations, families are welcome to celebrate the ridiculous and find pleasure in the everyday with I Made This For You.

Starring queer theater artist Carmen Nikae, the Clown does not exist without the Pooblic (the audience) with whom they interact directly. The silent film elements, projected on the back wall and created exclusively by Nikae who plays all the characters, show us what’s happening simultaneously in a different location while we see the live clown navigate an all too human dilemma.

Directed by Alyson Schacherer, this story of a lonely Clown searching for connection presents issues of queerness, gender, vulnerability and resilience revealing that deep seriousness and deep playfulness are in fact closely related.

Special Talkbacks with the artist will be held after each 40-minute performance.

Friday: After the performance, learn more about the process of clowning and its connection to resilience and vulnerability.

Saturday: After the performance, Carmen will speak about her creative process as an actor and clown, and will answer questions from the audience.

Sunday: After the performance, Carmen will discuss her inspiration with the audience, including how the themes around clowning can be used in work and life!

Carmen Nikae is a queer, bi-coastal actor, writer, and clown; her journey in theatrical clown began in 2015 with Jean E. Taylor, which led to the development of Elsinore or Bust!, a clown show based on Hamlet, with Jean and other clowns. During the 2020 lockdown in her NYC apartment, she began creating silent, black-and-white films inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s work. Curious about the combination of live clown work and silent short films, Carmen co-created with Alyson Schacherer a queer, solo clown show called I Made This For You, which premiered at The Hollywood Fringe Festival in June 2023 in LA.

Carmen dabbles at the intersection of clown and silent film and continues to create silent short films, some of which are based on the characters in her solo show. She’s excited to share her clown work with the community of Muncie and invite them into the vulnerability & resilience, pursuit of pleasure, and accepting the ridiculous that are foundational to clowning!
