“touching the stove coil” Artist Talk and Performance by PlySpace Resident, Camila Ortiz

PlySpace, the artist in residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) presents a one-night only artist talk and performance by PlySpace Resident, Camila Ortiz on Thursday, October 21 at 6:30 pm in the PlySpace Gallery. Ortiz will perform “touching the stove coil”, a collection of songs she created during the month of October while at PlySpace. The songs are explorations of personal and family histories interwoven with scenes from her time in Muncie, and will be performed on guitar, voice, and electronics. This event is free and open to the public. Masks are required.

Camila Ortiz is a songwriter, performer, and educator based in New York. Spanning folk, pop, and avant-garde, her music employs words, colors, textures, and space to invite moments of reflection and emotional release. Her songs have been featured by NPR’s All Songs Considered, Input/Output Magazine, and Various Small Flames. Her piece “Banishing Spell'' for 40-channel speaker diffusion system was performed at the Hydra Festival in Cambridge, MA and Klang! Festival in Montpelier, France. She has collaborated with Ian Askew on sound scores for Kamal Nassif’s ALA EADHA, Christopher Myers’ The Art Of Taming Horses, Kaneza Schaal, Joie Lee, and Jackie Sibblies Drury’s The Healing, and an AR introduction to Safia Elhillo’s Home Is Not a Country. Her practice also encompasses visual art and teaching.

While in residence at PlySpace, Camila will be teaching a workshop series on interdisciplinary storytelling for students at The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities. The workshops invite participants to explore and honor significant personal narratives through visual notation, ritual, and performance.
