MuncieArts Announces Selected Artists and Projects for $500,000 Public Art Initiative
The Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) is proud to announce the four public art projects and artists selected as part of a $500,000 investment in community-based art, made possible through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding awarded by the City of Muncie. The initiative brings significant public artworks to the historic South Central and Whitely neighborhoods—locations identified through community engagement and alignment with city goals of neighborhood connection, economic development, and population growth.
In 2021 the City of Muncie selected MuncieArts, the city's official arts partner, to administer the new public art funding. Through a year-long process that included extensive public input, a diverse steering committee, and national and international artist outreach, four visionary projects have emerged to reflect and uplift the character of their neighborhoods.
The selected artworks include:
Habitat for Humanity Gateway Gathering Space at W 8th and S Hoyt Ave, Muncie, IN 47302
Artist: Greg Mueller
A sculptural public gathering space at Habitat for Humanity, encouraging reflection and neighborhood pride. The gateway piece includes space for conversation, quiet time, play, and performance - all with a goal of being a safe community third space open to all.
Shaffer Chapel Sculpture at 1501 E Highland Ave, Muncie, IN 47303
Artist: Cheryl Derricotte
A sculptural installation honoring the legacy and cultural significance of Shaffer Chapel created in close partnership with the church’s leadership. This project reflects the deep community roots and shared vision of renewal, remembrance, and reverence. Portraits will be revealed at the unveiling, celebrating the people and stories that have shaped Shaffer Chapel’s enduring role in the community.
ArtRize Mural at 1600 Doctor M.L.K. Jr Blvd, Muncie, IN 47303
Artist: Ashley Nora
A dynamic and vibrant mural at ArtRize reflecting the vibrancy and resilience of the Whitely community, the connection to the nearby natural space of McCulloch Park, and the people-focused mission of the community space.
Interactive Sculpture at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Muncie- Roy C. Buley Clubhouse at 1111 N Penn St, Muncie, IN 47303
Artist: Project One Studio
A play-based structure inviting exploration and connection, tailored for young people and families. The art piece will be both a gathering and performance space, and the final exterior designs will reflect words and images from the neighborhood.
These projects join three others already on display in Muncie that were also completed with ARPA funds.
MORE LOVE by Chris Silva, installed on Future Choices building at 905 S. Walnut St. in 2023.
Five Dots by Nicole Ponsler, installed on the Muncie Public Library building at Hoyt & Memorial in 2023.
Midnight Palace, designed in 2021 by the Chicago-based architecture and design practice Future Firm for Exhibit Columbus Architecture Biennial in Columbus, Indiana.
“These projects are a celebration of Muncie’s creativity, resilience, and commitment to place,” noted Tania Said, Executive Director of MuncieArts. “We are honored to work with talented artists, deeply engaged neighborhoods, and essential partners like Shaffer Chapel to realize art that speaks to history, hope, and a shared vision for the future that adds to our city's economic growth, sustainable communities, and health and wellness.”
Mayor Dan Ridenour added: “Muncie is investing in more than art—we are investing in people, in pride, and in progress. These public artworks reflect our commitment to economic development and meaningful neighborhood revitalization that supports our goal of growing our city’s population through vibrant, inclusive spaces.”
The public artworks are expected to be installed in phases beginning late 2025 through early 2026, with community celebrations planned around each unveiling.
