Artist: Eliza Sandlin
Project Title: Keep Muncie Weird
Location: Walnut and Centennial
Statement: I believe that Muncie is a uniquely weird town. There are many different types of people who live here. Whether you're a student just passing through, a local, or a student turned local like me, there is something here for everyone. We have all sorts of little snippets of counter-culture here that people wouldn't expect! For example, we have a roller derby team and a paranormal society. Both are things I had no idea about when I moved to Muncie in 2013. At that time, I wasn't even aware of Muncie's large art community yet. I spent much of my undergrad hearing people talk about how they thought Muncie was boring. I have come to love this town and felt so incredibly drawn to take part in the beautification process allowed by the BOX!BOX! program. I hope this funky little piece of art can convince people that Muncie isn't nearly as boring as they make it out to be. Through vibrant colors and bold patterns, I have designed a piece of art that stands out against most of the preconceived notions of our town.
Bio: A creative at heart, Eliza Sandlin grew up doing arts and crafts like her life depended on it. In high school she taught herself special effects makeup and became an avid horror fan. Today, she is a maker who specializes in all things weird and spooky. She sells her creations under the title Recently Deceased Art. Eliza dabbles in many mediums including sculpture, acrylic painting, and making costumes and props. After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in Creative Writing in 2017, she decided to make Muncie her home. In 2019, she created her brand Recently Deceased Art and taught herself to be a digital illustrator. She also works at Pumpkin Pulp where she helps make Halloween masks and props. When she's not busy creating, she can usually be found playing roller derby with Muncie's own Cornfed Derby Dames or watching old horror movies while snuggled up with her cats.
