Linda Ryan - 2018 Fall Resident

Linda Ryan is a choreographer, dancer, performance artist, and multimedia explorer. She seeks to test the boundaries of dance performance with unconventional costumes, tools, and technologies. She has created movement with velcro suits, wearable audio speakers, GoPro action cameras, and more. She holds a BA in Dance from the George Washington University's Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, where she received the Luther Rice Research Fellowship as well as the Enosinian Scholars Grant. She is an award-winning dance researcher, conducting movement research and experiential choreography both internationally and at home in the US. Her previous performances include work by The Maida Withers Dance Construction Company, Vladimir Conde Reche, Annika B. Lewis, I-Fen Tung, and Anton Ovchinnikov. Linda worked in Washington, DC until 2018 and is now based in upstate New York.

Postmodern Madness in Muncie!

While at PlySpace this fall, Linda developed a thermochromic (heat-sensitive) floor that she could use in dance performances. Drawing from her interest in new technologies, Linda merged her choreographic work with the Go-pro camera with her new floor system to examine how the body leaves an imprint in space and time. Her final performance, The Thaw, presented her research to the public at the PlySpace Gallery. Linda also collaborated with Spring 2018 PlySpace resident Melissa Joy Livermore to reimagine her Deconstruction project as two person performance.

Linda collaborated with the Cornerstone Center for the Arts to share her expertise in postmodern dance with technology through numerous classes with children and adults. Even the PlySpace staff became well versed in the Bartiniev X! Then she popped over to the BSU Department of Theatre and Dance to teach a workshop on dance improvisation. If you didn’t catch her there, you may have seen her during her special one night October Muncie Arts Walk performance, The Teller, or even as the creepy hospital patient in the Son of Scarevania Haunted House!
