Karissa Hahn - 2020 Fall Virtual Resident
Karissa Hahn is a visual artist based in Los Angeles who holds a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Her work articulates the nature of contemporary image reproduction and dissemination through the use of analogue and digital technologies. As images are being generated and circulated at an ever-increasing rate, her work surveys the subtextual underpinnings at play in our current media landscape. This investigation of media equates to both her gestural work in super 8 and also her assessment of media circulation by reproducing digital images frame-by-frame onto celluloid. Whether creating performative films to highlight the hidden intensities of the everyday or blurring digital ephemera into physical reality through inkjet printing, her work surveys the spectacle of information overload, conjuring up a storm of ‘spectra ephemera.’ Hahn has shown around the planet Earth in various cinemas, galleries, and institutions such as the New York Film Festival, TIFF, MoMA, SFMOMA, Rotterdam, Ann Arbor Film Festival, and the Anthology Film Archives, among others.
While in residence, Hahn will be armed with her super 8 camera and cassette recorder, responding to the immediate environment to continue her gestural series. She will also spend dedicated time on her current piece, NewsReals, which is an ongoing project that investigates the imagery generated by today’s 24-hours news cycle. Comprised of twitter birds, North Korean missile launches, and screengrabs of political speeches, this piece assesses the politics of media saturation at a granular level by printing digital frames onto 16mm film.
