Joshua Ice - Spring 2022 Resident Fellow

Joshua Ice is an emerging artist that works with ideas related to STEAM education concepts and philosophy through kinetic and light based installation art. Through his installations, he analyzes science and pseudo-science, culminating in curious environments that provoke viewers to engage in self reflection.

Working in light manipulation, atmospheric design, and sculpture, Ice’s studio operates as a quasi laboratory for developing new ideas, and a fabrication shop. Joshua has a background in lighting and technology, and his projects explore concepts of science, perception of the mundane, and obsession with spectacle–representing STEM based ideas through high design and atmosphere. Ice holds the position of Exhibitions Coordinator for the Mattress Factory museum, providing a platform for continued growth in artistic practices and technical savvy. Exhibiting in traditional and non-traditional spaces such as outdoor Cultural Trust Gallery Crawls, Bricolage Immersive Theater, Mattress Factory Museum, and other pop ups style exhibitions, gives a chance to experiment in many different formats and mediums.

Joshua graduated from Point Park University with a BFA in Lighting Design and Entertainment Technology and uses his theater training to create fully immersive works.

High Maintenance, Joshua Ice

While in residence at PlySpace, Ice created a site specific sculpture from a combination of reclaimed materials and interactive lighting and video elements from Cornerstone Center for the Arts’ historic building. High Maintenance was created with reclaimed items found within the former masonic lodge to create a room sized assemblage that point towards the themes of maintenance and workmanship. He also worked directly with students from Ball State University School of Art who created their own found art sculptures and explored interactive elements and materiality in the process. The students held a private exhibition in the School of Arts’ lighting studio.

Joshua presented an Artist Lecture on his past work on Monday, February 28th at 6pm in AJ225 of the Art and Journalism Building on Ball State’s Campus.

High Maintenance was exhibited on the third floor of the Cornerstone Center for the Arts from April 21 until April 24, 2022. The materials used for the installation were returned back to their original spaces.
