Make films with your inkjet printer! A two-part online workshop with That One Film Festival Juror Karissa Hahn

About this Event

Join PlySpace resident and That One Film Festival juror, Karissa Hahn, for a free, two-part online workshop!

Using readily available software and strips of recycled film, we will turn your home office into a film studio. Participants will learn how to make moving images on 16mm film with household inkjet printers. We will traverse digital and analog realms, turning downloaded videos and images into celluloid motion pictures.

No prior filmmaking experience is necessary, the goal of the workshop is to experiment and celebrate the joy of filmmaking at home!

The films made during this workshop will be screened on First Thursday, September 3rd during an outdoor film scavenger hunt in downtown Muncie, Indiana.

Participants must be located in the Muncie area or be able to return their film to PlySpace for processing and digital transfer by Saturday, August 29th.

How to Register:

Limit to 12 participants. Participation is free. Workshop is conducted online.

Register at EventBrite!

All participants must register by Friday, August 15th so they can receive their supplies in time for the first workshop date.

All participants must attend both workshop days (August 20th and 27th from 6-8 PM).

Because spaces are limited, please email us at hello@plyspace.org if you need to cancel your reservation so we can open the space up to other participants.

About the Workshop:

Complete workshop details will be emailed to participants before the workshop date. Contact us if you have questions or concerns regarding workshop accessibility. Here is an example of the workshop structure:

Participants will meet via Zoom during the two workshop times. A Zoom Meeting (zoom.us) link will be distributed participants via email prior to each date. Karissa will lead the group through the process of laying out film for printing using a free online digital photo editing software, Gimp (gimp.org). Participants must be able to download this software on a computer to participate.

Participants will then create their own films using the software. Karissa will demonstrate how to layout the files and print the film on a home inkjet printer. The workshop will also have time for discussion and troubleshooting. If you do not have a home printer, you can send your final digital files to hello@plyspace.org, and we will print and process them for you.

PlySpace will provide supplies for the project, including 16mm film for printing. Please include your mailing address with your registration - we will use this address to send you the film supplies for the project prior to the first workshop day.

After you have completed your film printing you can drop off your printed film at the PlySpace Residency mailbox (located at 608 E. Main Street, Muncie). PlySpace will convert your printed film to a projection and will transfer the film to a digital download for each participant. If you email your film to PlySpace for printing, we can take care of the transfer process for you.

PlySpace will screen the completed films on September 3rd as part of a promotion for That One Film Festival. Participants will receive more information about the screening during the workshop.

What will the final films look like?
