Episode 4: Jaelin Phillips
What Muncie Neighborhood do you live in?
BSU Campus
I call myself a:
Designer
What is your creative practice?
I design clothing, art & events dedicated to celebrating creativity & self improvement
How did you get started in your practice?
I’ve always been a doodler, any chance I got I was drawing something (usually anime characters). As I got older I became interested in shoes & clothing , and started making my own versions of popular apparel. After high school I got a retail job & with the access to some funds & clothes began to bring ideas I had for apparel to life. Since then the brand “No Rivals” has evolved into clothing, a record label, & a creative hub for showcasing dope creatives.
Are you an artist full time? If no, what is your day job?
Besides designing, I also help local business and creatives in developing & executing digital marketing strategies.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I take inspiration from everything, whether it’s the way the sun set a certain way or the way an old comic book designed their cover. The worlds an inspiring place we just gotta keep our eyes open!
How do you find time to make your work?
When you have something you’re called to do- there’s always time.
What do you wish others knew about your practice?
Clothing isn’t just a popular logo. The story details & process that go into making pieces require a deeper look to fully grasp.
If you could be doing anything right now, what would it be?
Designing clothes or going to a concert with no corona of course.
What materials, instruments, or technology do you use in your practice?
I use a variety of materials to construct garments- anything from 3d printers- to embroidery /print machines , sewing machines- I’ve even used a blowtorch & power tools! Everything is fair game
What is your favorite thing in your studio / workspace?
I have a clothing display stand I purchased from a closing store in the mall. It takes up half of my studio but it helps me separate collections & works in progress
What’s on your bookshelf or playing in your studio these days?
I’m currently reading the art of stillness (a book about daoism) & listening to user submitted songs through our weekly livestream music sessions!
What other creative practitioners do you look to for inspiration?
I find influence in cartoons as well as musicians that spread motivational messages through their medium. Current favorites are Big Sean, Travis Scott & Jay Z.
What is your favorite part about being an artist in Muncie?
Often overlooked but there is a lot of talent here both older & established along with a new budding generation of creatives. Much more than meets the eye!
What is your favorite place in Muncie?
There’s no place like home!
What is your favorite creative place to go
Definitely social media- if you follow the right people your feed can be a beautiful showing of talent
