Artist: Maya Doss
Project Title: Grow!
Location: Walnut and 15th
Statement: Muncie is where I grew up. It’ s the city my roots formed in and for this it will always feel like home to me. Having grown up here, I know the city and its people well. With my box, I want to create encouragement for Muncie’ s citizens to not lose hope or give up in the face of adversity. Everyday is an opportunity to learn something new, to improve ourselves, to better our community! Growth is a constant journey that is not always easy, but “ Grow!” is a positive push- a reminder that we are still alive, under the sun, always on the path to becoming our highest selves.
Bio: My name is Maya Doss. I have been involved in the arts here in Muncie my entire life. I was in art classes at Cornerstone and at Muncie Central, I was heavily involved at Muncie Civic Theatre from 6th grade to 12th grade, and I was in the Show Choir for the Muncie Community Christmas Sing every year! Since highschool, I have continued to express myself artistically. I am 21 years old and still an artist, furthering my craft through the Painting BFA at IU Bloomington. Art has been my closest friend at my low points, but also the reason for my greatest achievements! I love to connect and heal myself and others through art. My goal after college is to be a muralist who paints uplifting murals to encourage and bring positivity into communities! A majority of my works are centered around elements and themes of nature. I believe the Mother Earth is our greatest teacher and a never ending source of inspiration. We can learn a lot about ourselves and what is truly important by exploring the natural world around us and realizing we are all much more interconnected than we appear to be.
