Artist: Jeremie Riggleman
Project Title: Gander
Location: Tillotson & Gilbert
Project Statement: One thing I love about Muncie is the variety of bird species! Especially the geese. I have noticed that there are BoxBox projects about birds and other animals as well. They are cheerful, attractive and accessible to young and old. Accessibility is important to my work, and it's playful nature is relatable. The natural habitats for these animals, including the White River running through town, is such an important part of the history and culture here. I am also thrilled with the chance to show work in such an accessible place- the public view.
In my Gander series, the allover nature and repetition of forms stems from the idea of a world where lawn art is pervasive and inescapable. It's a place where we are overwhelmed with color and shiny objects, akin to Jeff Koons or Lynn Aldrich, and intrinsic value is bestowed upon what was previously overlooked. The title “Gander”, being a noun and a verb, is especially important because it introduces the multifaceted nature of the work.
